“When did we murder curiosity” by Sam Cheema

Our Dragons’ Den is today. I will not wish you ‘good luck’ because luck has nothing to do with it – everything you have ‘created’ and achieved as a team is directly proportional to the time, effort, and ‘creativity’ you put into the work (I am amused with the idea of using pillows as judges to help you practice https://twitter.com/marnybk/status/807006032425873408)

Today is just one day. What happens today is just a snapshot in time – like taking a photo. You can all improve from today, or regress – it is entirely up to you.
If you are still unsure about why it is important to take part, here is a blog post from a BA student I have invited to join us as a guest for our morning class:

WHEN DID WE MURDER CURIOSITY?

by Sam Cheema

Being a student, I am fortunate to be in the trenches of what’s going on around with education, ‘young people’ and trends.

One of my roles is being a course rep. Students tell me what they do and don’t like about the course.

One thing that they don’t like: learning.

This was so interesting. They come to university to ‘learn’ but they would rather just learn what they need for their assignments. Then as quickly as it goes in it is flushed straight out.

They aren’t curious.

This baffled me.

Now, this may be only from my interpretation and experiences but have we killed curiosity?

Have we now silently told students that all you need is a piece of paper that says you have a degree?

But, businesses want passionate and enthusiastic employees. They look for the ones that take their education further. Time and time again they want skilled workers who can push their business to new heights.

Clearly there’s a disconnect.

We are now filled with information and we consume shit all day. But, we don’t create. We don’t document. It’s seen as ‘keen and uncool’ (real words some peers have used to describe it).

It’s uncool to be unemployed. It’s uncool to work in a job you hate.

Isn’t it?

Here’s the question, the brief, the challenge and the saviour.

HOW DO WE MAKE PEOPLE CURIOUS AGAIN?

Dragons’ Den is this Friday – are you ready?

Three days to go, teams!

Challenge accepted
Our #mace16 Twitter feed tells us you’re busy preparing for Friday:

While it is fantastic to see dedication and passion at work, please remember to eat, sleep, etc. Sometimes a good sleep makes all the difference for teams after a long week.

Here is also some last-minute advice from our resident expert Dwain:

Remember that the purpose of this Dragons’ Den is to give you constructive feedback which you can take to improve your businesses in order to get ready for the first trade fair in January. This is not a TV show experience and our judges are here to help you.

I will brief the judges in front of you so you know that they will be asked for no cruel nor kind feedback –  but for fairness and objectiveness in relation to the marking criteria.  Even though we use marking sheets, these marks are only a guide (please read my previous blog post again…)
